By the 1990s Indian organizations in New York City had proliferated. If the hallmark activity of Taiwanese immigrants was starting businesses (Chen 1992, 104–107), and that of Koreans founding churches (Park 1997, 183), the leading activity of Indian immigrants was forming organizations. From the 1960s onward, Indians founded a myriad of organizations serving a myriad of interests. New organizations were frequently additions to and not replacements of existing ones, so that by the 1990s multiple layers of Indian communitywide and more-specialized and focused organizations existed in New York City. Yet while these many associations and interests coexisted, they remained
