Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This study discusses the use of authentic writing experiences in the classroom. Specifically, a pen pal letter writing project is implemented between two second grade classrooms located in suburban South Jersey. This research study is separated into five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the study. How does engagement in letter writing effect student performance? is the research question the study revolves around. A review of research literature published regarding pen pal, authentic writing experiences, benefits, and effects are discussed in chapter two. The context of the study and research design are explained in chapter three. This qualitative study collects data based upon observations noted in a teacher researcher journal, student performance assessed through a letter writing rubric, and students' own perspective of their growth as a writer revealed in a concluding survey. Chapter four discusses findings and common themes that emerged from data collected. Increased motivation, stamina in writing, and writing performance such as sentence complexity, number of sentences, and grammar usage were found. Chapter five summarizes and names limitations to the study, then suggests implications for future research.
