  • Well-paying jobs were the basic motivation for the post-1965 Indian immigration. At first largely from middle-class, well-educated backgrounds, Indians migrated to the United States to further improve their standard of living. The contrasting economic conditions in India and the United States in the 1960s and 1970s fed those expectations, and the professional careers and business achievements of Indian immigrants during these decades underlay the “successful immigrant” image attached to the entire group (Helweg and Helweg 1990).
