Stories told through images, like those in comics or graphic novels awaken a great fascination (particularly) in young readers, boys and girls alike. They are invited to dive in in a story told between pictures and text. reading, seeing, and imagining are the central actions during the reception-process. contrary to perspectives of a pragmatically oriented approach of readingliteracy, which emanates from the ‘competent reader’, this paper will take into account the reception-processes and social practices from the perspective of an emergentliteracy. Through our current study Narrations in Texts and Images - Graphic Novels in German Lessons the graphic novel My Mommy is in America and she met Buffalo Bill by jean regnaud and Émile bravo (2007) was read in an elementary school class at the end of the second grade. We created video records and transcripts of the discussions and documented the texts and pictures from the students. Key incidents were chosen from the various perception data, analyzed and compiled. Through our observations of the interactions during the lessons, the students’ conversations, writings, and pictures uncovered the literary and aesthetic experiences of the children. (Orig.).
