Group facilitators have a key role to play in the success of a group education programme. They need both the theoretical knowledge and the ability to share this knowledge with different audiences in order to achieve the best outcomes for the target group. Facilitators need to have a good understanding of how people learn and the underpinning learning theories; behavioural, cognitive, humanistic, social and situational. They need to encourage individual members of a group to reflect on how their behaviours influence their health and well‐being. Active listening skills are well recognized as being important in one‐to‐one consultations. Motivational interviewing aims to enhance self‐efficacy and personal control for behaviour change. Emotional intelligence embraces and draws from numerous other branches of behavioural, emotional and communication theories but with a real focus on empathy. Understanding how individuals react and behave in group settings can further enable the facilitator to provide the appropriate level of support.
