  • There are a wide range of environmental impacts associated with the production and use of synthetic (mineral) fertilizers and biobased fertilizers. The environmental impacts of biobased fertilizers are of a different nature than those of mineral fertilizers, and they occur at different life‐cycle stages. This chapter elucidates the environmental effects, both negative and positive, that occur at the different stages of the biobased fertilizer production process, as well as following land application, when benchmarked against fossil‐based synthetic fertilizers. The environmental impact of a biobased fertilizer will depend on the type of waste in question, coupled with the treatment technology and resultant use of the outputs. The chapter provides a summary of the life‐cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and a case study example of an LCA applied to a manure treatment. It also presents a more extensive example of an LCA of selected processes of nutrient recovery from digestate.
