Sievers (1878) dealt with allophonic variation of some resonants in the parent language. Edgerton (1934, 1943) extended Sievers's rule to other resonants such as liquids & nasals & provided treatment of the resonant allophones in all environments. Reconstruction of the original variation of Proto-Indo-European resonants was made on the basis of Germanic data. Gothic was found to be most consistent among Germanic languages. Such ready observance of the rule has led to underestimating its jurisdiction in Old English. A detailed study of Old English & a consideration of the data from the broad standpoint of Sievers - gemination (of paramount importance) & Germanic reductives - shows that nominal & adjectival systems are from the original semivowel alternants. 23 References.
