  • Feminist theories cover a great spectrum of methodological & ideological positions. In general, postmodern & poststructuralist theories deny that society is an articulated reality. In spite of the fact that the concept of gender does not obstruct the perception of open totality, but still totality, it does give researchers the chance to ignore this & even deny it. It does not mean that dealing with gender relations leads necessarily to a fragmented vision of society & hence to a conception of an entire absence of power structures. But the risk exists, & a commitment to a fragmented social reality is, in fact, present in a number of feminist theories. One of the consequences of this is to separate domination from exploitation, putting the first in the political sphere & the second in the economic domain. This leads to dichotomic thought that fails to meet the needs of discriminated groups like women. It is enough to remember that violence is a critical & omnipresent component of the socialization process; its threat is enough to distinguish the category women from the category men & assure female obedience to gender social organization. Threat is everywhere & has many dimensions, eg, gender, class, & race/ethnicity. Situating domination in the political sphere & exploitation in the economic, it is impossible to perceive the deep articulation between them. In addition, there is a real symbiosis that cannot be split even for analytical purposes. If this links is ignored, adequate policies to eliminate gender, & specifically domestic, violence cannot be formulated or implemented. This is one reason why women's police stations in Brazil are far from success, though other general & local factors must also be taken into account.
