• Presented is a historical sketch of the technical term Sozialpadagogik (social pedagogy) from 1844 to the present. Although Adolph Diesterweg (1790-1866) is generally credited with having coined this term, its true author is Karl Mager (1810-1858), who published the term in 1844. Mager understood the term to mean education in connection with society (as opposed to individualistic education), while Diesterweg understood the term to mean the branch of educational activities designed to help the underprivileged-what we now call social work. The term properly refers to the education of man as a social being; any notion of the underprivileged is a secondary meaning. Modified HA.
