A study is made of the impact of labeling adolescents in the social milieu. Two labels, "delinquent" & "school failure," were analyzed with respect to their function in restricting postschool career options. Data were gathered between 1964 & 1971 from a group of 284 M high school sophomores in the Pacific Northwest. A panel design was employed. Analysis indicates that, when controlling SC, the label "delinquent" does not function as a serious social liability for students failing academically in school. Conversely, the label does restrict options for successful students. Academic status emerges as the best predictor of career options. 3 Tables. Modified HA.
