Elaborates on Antonio Gramsci's 1967 theory of intellectual formation in order to discuss contemporary dilemmas of Brazilian sociologists regarding the insertion of social critique into social reality. At issue is Gramsci's concept of an organic intellectualism rooted in diverse analysis, observation, & critique & thus intrinsically linked to & across all social groups. Current trends in Brazilian sociology appear to adhere to political & social hegemonies, losing perspective on the labor class by readily accepting the inevitability of privatization & the expertise of technological & bureaucratic professionals. The increase of highly qualified & diversely specialized sociologists in Brazil since 1990 has not translated into critical or practical diversity. This lack is evident in Brazilian sociology's overall favorable reaction to the US declaration of war on terrorism following the September 11 (2001) attacks on the US, with Brazilian academia typically following the North American hegemony. 15 References.
