• IN the last Number we endeavoured to bring before our readers the striking contrast which obtains between Popish and Protestant states. Where Popish principles are actively cultivated, where they regulate the practice of the population, they produce ignorance and misery. But this ignorance is at once the cause and consequence of Popery. It is cherished by its prelates. By its priests darkness is spread over the country, and thick darkness by its friars.
