  • The purpose of software configuration management (SCM) is to manage change throughout the software development process. Changes necessary to the discipline of SCM to accommodate the radical changes being made to the software development process are discussed. New life cycles offer alternatives to the traditional waterfall model. They include reusable software, throwaway prototypes, evolutionary prototypes, operational prototypes, and automated software synthesis from requirements. As software costs continue to skyrocket and more resources are spent on systems that do not satisfy user needs, more widespread use of reusable software and all kinds of prototyping will be seen. As the problem continues to escalate, automated software synthesis will become more practical and new alternatives to the waterfall life cycle will appear.
