• Integer addition has an important role in the design of block ciphers, hash functions, and stream ciphers. A simple method for calculating the linear approximation probability of integer additions is presented. For a given s-box constructed from a mapping f:Z super(n) sub(2) arrow right Z super(m) sub(2), the linear approximation table entry LAT( alpha , beta ) is defined as LAT( alpha , beta ) identical with #{xIMOSZ super(n) sub(2)| alpha times x identical with beta times f(x)}-2 super(n-1), where alpha IMOSZ super(n) sub(2), beta IMOSZ super(m) sub(2)-{0}, alpha times x denotes the inner product of the vectors alpha and x evaluated over Z sub(2), and #{ times } denotes the cardinality of the enclosed set.
