• In an article from 1974, the late Peter Meller ascribed to the precociously gifted sculptor Pierino da Vinci (ca. 1529-1553/54) a pair of bronze statuettes in the Ca' d'Oro, Venice, of a Bacchus clutching a bunch of grapes and a goddess holding fruit. His attribution to Pierino was based largely on his discovery in the Ca' D'Oro's store of a bronze socle on which the two statuettes were once mounted. The socle's bottom steps are inscribed "M D XL VII" and "Opera da Piero da Vinci." The author of the present article argues instead in favor of an attribution to Giovanni Francesco Susini.
