Recently the novel of ideas has received a new advocate in J. M. Coetzee, who has come forward, quite unapologetically, with two novels that can barely contain the ideas presented with such relentless determination by their protagonists: Elizabeth Costello and Diary of a Bad Year. In contrast to continental novels of ideas, which revel in intellectual debate among protagonists, Elizabeth Costello and Diary of a Bad Year are characterized by the near absence of this type of philosophical dialogue.
