• [...] this forum assessing the progress of women playwrights since Lynda Hart's landmark 1989 anthology provides a welcome opportunity to reflect upon the status of black women dramatists. Because many plays by African American women deal with the past or dramatize personal stories deeply rooted in black communities, much is missed by production teams and critics who have only a superficial knowledge of black culture: the playwright's vision is not properly realized or she is not sufficiently challenged to sharpen her craft; black audiences are not appropriately targeted and attracted to these mainstream theatres; and audiences, no matter what their identity, are deprived of intelligent criticism.
