The US Department of Justice ("DOJ") broadly defines computer crime--also known as cybercrime--as a crime that "use(s) or target(s) computer networks." Although computer crime includes traditional crimes, such as fraud or theft committed with the use of a computer, it also encompasses unique criminal behaviors such as hacking. Though cybercrime is prosecuted at the state and federal levels, its frequency is difficult to measure. Here, Swinford et al discuss federal, state, and international approaches to computer crime. They examine state tactics to fight computer crime and analyze challenges to enforcement.
