The Cresswell Pele Tower Community Archaeology Project is a Heritage Lottery funded project aimed at conserving and re-roofing the tower, investigating the tower and its hinterland and providing public access and interpretation. The archaeological investigations carried out in 2017 and 2018 identified six separate structural phases within the site and its environs supported by radiocarbon dates, ceramics and stratigraphie sequencing. These included a 12-13th century manorial complex pre-dating the pele tower; the construction of the pele tower in the 14th century as a defensible solar and as part of a wider manorial complex; a phase of alterations made to the original pele tower in the 15th-17th centuries; the construction of an 18th century Mansion House; the demolition of the Mansion House and restoration of the tower as a folly; and finally the dereliction and subsequent repair of the tower. In addition, trenches within the field adjacent to the tower identified activity dating to the Mesolithic and Early Bronze Age periods. The tower has now been restored and is open to the public.
