Beschreibungen/Notizen
Payne’s novel would be followed by Ernest Shackle-ton’s disastrous attempt to cross Antarctica, which ended when his ship, Endurance, was crushed in sea ice. O’Dell has his critics, among them Debbie Reese, the editor of the blog site American Indians in Children’s Literature, who does not recommend this Robin-sonade for young adults, and Anita Tarr, whom Kinane cites, in several publications (see Reese and Tarr). A “liminal” political structure of communitas, “an undifferentiated, non-hierarchical structure” that places equality at the center of social life, centers the novel (175). According to Hicks, Bray “positions the island not only as a setting for sexual rendezvous, but also a distinctly experimental arena for girls to navigate gendered behaviours and question conservative social mores concerning female sexuality” (185–86).
