  • Despite such negative social norms, women wrote and published in increasing numbers and many women authors became well-regarded literary voices in their own time. By demonstrating the social, ideological, and material hindrances that women authors were confronted with when writing and publishing, these scholars often focused on the negative strategies that women authors employed, in order to mitigate, justify, and exculpate their literary productivity. The four essays in this section offer nuanced and varied insights into women authors' work of building community around writing and reading, by examining how women authors interacted with their readers, how they sought exchange with other women authors, and what impact a translator's role had in disseminating women authors' texts beyond German-speaking countries.
