In his recent article in The Journal of Philosophy, Samir Okasha has given a novel and interesting explanation for the pervasiveness of risk-aversion in decision making--one based on evolutionary considerations. Okasha's explanation is important as it shows how useful evolutionary approaches can be for the investigation of many long-standing issues in philosophy and in the sciences. However, a closer look at the problem Okasha is trying to solve makes clear that, overall, he has not managed to account adequately for all the issues that need to be addressed. Here, by disregarding the fact that risk-loving behavior, too, is widespread, Schulz argues why Okasha's account ultimately fails to explain the nature of people's attitudes toward risk.
