I met James Alan McPherson only three or four times in person. Each was for the better part of a day or evening. Each was memorable. McPherson's fine memoir, Crabcakes, was already heading to bookstores when we spoke that evening over dinner. Our final direct conversation was during Jim's visit to Bloomington. For some the significance of his contribution to a national literature might rest on nearly two dozen tightly controlled and admirably well-wrought published short stories collected in Hue and Cry and Elbow Room. In his quiet and usually understated way, ever suspicious of Hayden's "gaudy mumbo-jumbo," James Alan McPherson charted his own undaunted path toward clarity of word and a vision of a whole self and vibrant community.
