  • Chapter One, "Corpus, Canon, and the Self-Collected Author," considers how anthologies affected contemporary writers. [...]Gamer notes, Keats could comfort himself, during the storm of post-Endymion criticism, with the thought, "I think I shall be among the English poets after my death." During this period, Smith's letten to her publisher, Thomas Cadell Sr., disclose an author "more caught up in the details of the publishing process than in the creative act" (Judith Phillips Stanton, editor of Smith's Collected Letters, quoted, 73). Critics, of Southey especially, too often ignore "the strong ties that exist between economic independence and creative autonomy" (159); something Gamer rectifies by considering how the former influenced the latter in Southey's career choices: he reveals that Southey divided up his days into "profitable" periods "after breakfast" ("writing articles and books that paid"), while demoting poetry-writing to the restful "hours before breakfast" (because his poetry could not be relied upon to pay).
