  • Jan Pouwer had a long and distinguished career in anthropology. When he died in April 2010 his last book, Gender, Ritual and Social Formation in West Papua. A Configurational Analysis Comparing Kamoro and Asmat, had just been published. The tide neatly refers to the problems that concerned him throughout his work: devising theoretically informed, comparative analyses of field work data on topics such as gender, myth and social organisation. At the time, Pouwer was a staff member of the 1959 Star Mountains expedition organised by the KNAG, the Royal Dutch Geographical Society. He was based in what was then, Hollandia, working for the Kantoor voor Bevolkingszaken, a research institute of the colonial administration. Pouwer's data filled a void because prior to his research anthropological data about the Star Mounts population had been lacking. After the expedition had ended, the colonial administration continued its station in Mabilabol.
