  • This chapter covers the Classic period. To provide resources for an expanded curriculum and diversified pedagogy, the chapter includes bibliographies and a discography focusing on composers of the era and relevant scholarship in areas including domestic and salon music making, colonialism, and performers from diverse backgrounds. Lesson One covers the first movement of the Sonata in E major by Marianna Martines. In conjunction with an analysis of the keyboard work, the lesson situates the woman composer as a key figure in the musical and cultural life of Vienna. With significant ties to luminaries such as Pietro Metastasio, Haydn, and Mozart, Martines moved in aristocratic circles throughout her adult life. Lesson Two focuses on the role of women in late eighteenth-century European concert life using Haydn's Sonata in E-flat Major, H. XVI: 52 as a case study. The dedications of the expansive and difficult sonata to two women (Therese Jansen-Bartolozzi and Magdalene von Kurzböck) who performed exclusively in salons indicates the prestige of private performance even as public concerts were becoming more frequent. Women working in music, including performers and impresarios such as Theresa Cornelys, found ways to maintain their respectability while shaping the musical landscapes of their home cities.
