Hybridization can be seen as a solution to increasing the initial energy system's autonomy or as a solution to improving the energy consumption of the means of transport. This chapter discusses hybridization of electric motors and combustion engines. It presents an analysis of the operating principle of range extender and its efficiency through the example of an electrically powered motor vehicle. The range extender concept can be extended to aeronautics. The chapter describes two major types of hybridization: soft type hybridization and classical hybridization. There are several possibilities for integrating a hybrid powertrain onto a vehicle, with a combustion engine as a base. The most common are the series hybrid, the parallel hybrid, and the mixed or power division hybrid. The chapter discusses the general principles of hybridization in the case of automobiles and presents an example of the hybrid air system. It also summarizes the different power chains and their advantages and disadvantages.
