Underlying the learning, retention and recall of language is the memory. Not only
are individual memory centres (visual, audio, etc.) and the processes involved with
short-term to long-term memory transference required to be effective, but the capacity of the working memory to cope with the merger of inputs and outputs needs
to be able to meet the demands of the task in hand. Reading involves a variety of
memory skills (visual and audio along with ocular scanning); to read aloud adds vocal
skills to the processing challenge; to comprehend the text requires access to semantic
memory traces; and then prediction, reiteration and retention of information involve
further processing challenges. Successful reading is by no means a simple achievement!
