Previous studies had shown that the organic content of the soil was important in controlling the adsorption of organic compounds in soil water systems. Batch experiments had been carried out to compare the roles of humic acid and human adsorbants in soils material from an aquifer in New Jersey, using toluene (a frequent contaminant of groundwater) as adsorbate. The experiments were carried out in the dark to minimize photochemical oxidation and the extraction procedures were carried out at very high and very low pH values to limit biochemical activity. Humic acid was the principal adsorbant in the aquifer material used.
