Contrasts the simple and stark characteristics of the chorale with plainchant, its musical accessibility leading to its early role in congregational function. This study traces the conditions in which the chorale became part of secular practice in the nineteenth century. Although reactions to its "dull, heavy see-saw" character were inevitable in a decade characterized by the popolaresco idiom of Donizetti, the Volkstümlichkeit of Weber and the mélodies populaires of Hérold, the chorale genre could be evoked in approximations as the operatic occasion demanded. The chorale also underwent various re-inventions at the hands of nineteenth-century symphonists among many others.
