• This article deals with 14 essays, written in 1999 by Ukrainian students (born between 1981 and 1985) on a self-chosen subject in history. The contribution focuses on "heroes" found in the students' texts, asking about the presentation and structure of these figures. Is "heroic pathos" important for a young developing nation, is it a universal structure, a result of historiography or history textbooks? Do young people need heroes, ideals, idols and models to find one's identity? If so, the task of the persons responsible for curricula development, textbooks, in-service teacher training and history teaching should consist in helping young people to find orientation, but avoiding to give them heroes and idols, strengthening nationalism, racism or totalitarism.
