• The stock of words of the popular language, as far as it is firmly anchored in the diverse syntactic turns, often contains important evidence about the social position of various occupations. The examples brought in this essay are a reflection of the socioeconomic condition of the foundry worker. Through an analysis of the vocabulary of the older generation we were able to represent the economic and social need, and the slight social prestige, under which the skilled and semi-skilled worker formerly had to suffer. In the vocabulary of the 40 and 20 year old informants the negative remarks were mainly found in relation to the semi-skilled worker: his small occupational prestige is due mainly to his small earnings and to his work, which is dependent and without greater responsibility. The position of a skilled worker has become an ideal to be striven for today, and has thereby become a significant goal for advancement.
