• "Inner colonies" of the German settlement movement were spaces thriving on contestation. The conceptual grid of moral economies invites us to think through the divergent positions as a field of relations between land reformers, vegetarians, Zionists, and völkisch actors. Deliberations about what constituted a just economy established relational concepts of land, nutrition, community, and the body. They moralized economy, marketed ethics, and economized the (racial) self. This article rethinks the continuities between inner colonies, garden cities, cooperative, Zionist, life-reform, and völkisch settlements, placing them in discourses about colonialism, commodification, and exclusion.
