This article explores the relationship between Tarkovsky'sNostalghia(1983) and Takemitsu's 1987 memorial composition for the film director by the same title. It argues that Takemitsu modeled his composition after Tarkovsky's unusual treatment of sound and image that, according to the composer, renders his film with a special kind of realism.
