• The imagery of family is widely tied to the success of Asian immigrants in the United States. And like other Asians, Indian immigrants themselves consider traditional family values to be a cornerstone of their culture, and a key distinguishing feature between themselves and Americans (Chen 1992; Kibria 1993; Bacon 1996; Park 1997). Indian immigrants in New York therefore assigned high priority to preserving their family traditions in the United States. From the 1960s through the 1990s that task became more possible as New York’s typical Indian families changed from nuclear husband–wife units to extended family networks of related households,
