• On a hot July after noon in Delhi in 2009, I sat down to interview Mr. V, a journalist and former managing editor for a leading Hindi news channel. I had been introduced to Mr. V, as I call him here, by a mutual friend in the news business who told me that he would be interested in my ethnographic interest in the news as a genre of storytelling. Mr. V began by asking me what my dissertation research was about. I started to explain my broadest research goal as I had laid it out in my dissertation proposal: to
