• More than four thousand institutions of higher education enroll nearly twenty million students in the United States across a mixture of public and private nonprofit colleges and universities and for-profit entities. Among those four thousand institutions are 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUS); 32 Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUS); and 539 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIS); community colleges, research universities, women’s colleges, cosmetology colleges; and Christian, Jewish, and Islamic universities. Higher education is at once sprawling and stretched thin. This chapter considers what impact social and economic changes stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic will have on existing racial and class inequalities
