• In 1922, almost thirty years after his first engagement with the project of seeing by electricity, American inventor Charles Francis Jenkins filed a patent application for an apparatus for “transmitting pictures by wireless.”¹ The centerpiece of the new transmission apparatus, which he developed as an off-shoot of another invention in the field of motion picture projection technology, was a novel optical instrument dubbed the prismatic ring. Essentially a glass prism with variable angles between its faces, the prismatic ring could bend rays of light so that they would rapidly oscillate along an axis as the prism rotated. According to the
