• The levels of global natural resource consumption have dramatically increased over the last several decades. The excessive reliance on fossil fuels as the overarching source of energy has contributed to global climatic changes with the detrimental increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The International Energy Agency documented an increase of 70 per cent in CO2/GHG emissions over the last ten years, primarily attributed to the process of extraction, production, and consumption of fossil fuels (IEA, 2019). The production of clean energy from alternative renewable resources is perceived as the primary approach to combat global warming and mitigate the environmental degradation caused by the production and consumption of fossil fuels. However, the integrated process of energy distribution (smart grids), data sharing (smart metrics), and efficient consumption (smart energy solutions) is inevitable to create a new and reliable market for renewables. Renewable energy is currently produced through a wide range of power sources such as hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and ocean waves and tides (Tester, 2005). This research examines the innovative renewable energy solutions for buildings and communities.
