Objective. This study examines how Indian societies witness the dynamic processes of the Covid-19 pandemic and social control policies that evolved as part of its containment. Design. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted between 2018 and 2019, and as part of the study, telephonic conversations with interlocutors were also carried out during the end of 2020. While the first section examines the trajectory of the evolution of social control policies that have taken shape to govern the societies, the second section examines the perceived changes in social life that have unfolded as part of the outbreak of pandemic and the implementation of social control policies. The third section attempts to gauge the implications of these social control policies for individuals in relation to their rights and autonomy. Contribution. Social control policies meant for the management of pandemic not only undermines legal rights of underprivileged classes but also enhances existing privileges of affluent classes. The ‘risk society’ which poses a trope for restructuring societies would subsequently push a section of vulnerable people towards greater risks.
