In the course of the 19th century, French teaching was implemented in schools. Only those teachers who received a specific university education and passed the academic examinations were employed. Depending on the teachers' university education, the quality and function of teaching literature altered. The so-called "language masters" ("maîtres de langue") of preceding centuries made use of literature in order to teach languages. However, the philologists belonging to the new generation intended to achieve further aims by teaching literature. How those aims were developed is shown by giving examples of didactic theory, by the choice of authors as well as texts, and by methods of teaching literature. (Verlag).
