  • This study concerns the international mobility of faculty members. An explorative empirical investigation was conducted among academic staff in the Netherlands in order to get an indication of the international mobility of academics, excluding Research Assistants ... . Various determinants may influence the international mobility of faculty members: academic rank, age, discipline, gender etc. The purpose of this study was to develop an empirically-based model in which the essential factors can be categorized and to formulate recommendations to provide university departments with adequate directions for improvement of International Faculty Mobility (IFM) in their organization... It can be observed that there are often no explicit IFM policies at university or departmental level while most universities have developed policies to encourage the international mobility of students... On average, the current percentages of student mobility are reasonably high. The actual percentages of IFM lag behind the expectations... The objectives of this investigations were: 1. to identify (by literature) the main IFM determinants, 2. to clarify (by questionnaire) which of these determinants influence the involvement of faculty members in IFM, 3. to provide recommendations for future IFM practice. The goal of this investigation was to find out what determinants play a role in the decision of faculty members to go abroad. The main reasons for going or not going will be discussed and practical recommendations will be given to implement policy plans. (DIPF/Orig.).
