  • [...]the island castaway narrative has been adapted to virtually every imaginable category of reader, and has migrated across an incredibly wide range of media: theatrical productions, film, comic books, toys, games, and innumerable commercial enterprises and consumer goods. Przemysław Uściński, in his nuanced study of The Female American (1767), attempts to complicate the colonial legacy of the Robinsonade by invoking Homi Bhabha's idea of a "third space" that troubles "the fixity of any cultural identity" (50). Andreas K. E. Mueller's and Glynis Ridley's excellent collection, Robinson Crusoe after 300 Years, covers some similar ground to Lipski's; it too includes essays on Robinsonades, stage adaptations, and the narrative function of storms. Remarkable for its careful attention to historical detail is Geoffrey Sill's study of the subversive burlesque stage convention of transgendering the Crusoe figure, the effect of which, Sill rightly observes, "challenged not only the gender of this cultural hero, but the notion of gender itself" (27); indeed, Sill argues further that these stage transgressions "challenged the culture 'of the dominant social order'"
