The libidinal unconscious, as theorized by Slavoj Žižek, takes the form of a transhistorical "real kernel" that returns as the force of desire, with subversive consequences for the discursive structure of language; individual praxis is cast accordingly as the genetic origin of social structures and the main dynamic in the transformation of society. In contrast, the ideological unconscious, as formulated by Juan Carlos Rodríguez, is "secreted" by the social relations of production "before" being formally legitimized within the State Apparatus. Far from denigrating human subjectivity, Rodríguez devotes considerable attention to theorizing the radically historical variants of the unconscious and also to exploring the contradictory structural forces of which this social subjectivity is deemed to be a condensation. The present essay aims to put both versions of the unconscious to the test of their objects through the close analysis of selected literary texts.
