  • •Included research on educational systems and inequality focuses on standardization and stratification.•High standardization of education systems is associated with low gender inequality.•Highly stratified education systems are associated with high socioeconomic and ethnic inequality.•Research included focuses on ethnic inequality, socioeconomic and gender inequality is less researched.•Theoretical knowledge on the macro-micro link is scarce. Educational system characteristics are key determinants of educational inequalities. We provide an overview of the growing body of literature in this field by conducting a systematic review to analyze how educational system characteristics shape educational inequalities. Web of Science was surveyed with 19 keywords, and we included 13 studies by conducting a critical analysis. The results show that standardization is associated with low gender inequality. Stratification relates to high ethnic inequality and between-school stratification to higher socioeconomic inequality. Most of the reviewed research lacks any theoretical explanation of the link between the macroeducational system level and educational inequalities at the micro level. In conclusion, further research specifically emphasizing theoretical explanations and the inclusion of different educational system characteristics is necessary.
