Fabric structures have been used in many permanent buildings for almost 30 years. Some of these applications are significant for their size or importance. Their form is a critical aspect of their efficiency. This paper describes the principal structural forms of tensile structures based on the author's experience with numerous executed or proposed designs and discusses their impact on the building's structure and function.
The purpose is to help engineers pick the right structural system for a specific purpose. The reasons for selecting a fabric structure often include their speed of erection, use of daylight, reflection of heat from the sun, dispersal of interior sound, the beauty of the interior space, and the excitement of the exterior sculpture.
Solutions to special problems related to fabric structures in permanent buildings are discussed.
