A reinterpretation of experimental data (gas-volumetric uptake of dioxygen) against an erroneous formulation for μ-oxo-bis[tetra(t-butyl)phthalocyaninatoiron(III)]
Data on oxygen uptake by tetra(t-butyl)phthalocyaninatoiron(II), [(
tBu
4)PcFe], (J. porphyr. Phtalocyanines 3 (1999) 87), claimed to support the Fe(II) formulation of the above compound, have been reexamined. It is shown that, contrary to previous conclusions, the data definitely indicate the alternative Fe(III) hypothesis.
The work published by Kaliya, Luk'yanets et al. on the O
2 uptake by tetra(t-butyl)phthalocyaninatoiron(II), [(
tBu
4)PcFe], leading to the μ-oxo species [(
tBu
4)PcFe]
2O, have been critically reexamined. Contrary to the conclusions of the cited authors favoring a Fe(II) formulation for the μ-oxo complex, it is shown that, based on a non-superficial use of their reported data, the Fe(III) formulation
I appears definitely to be the correct one.
