• The waiting area, on the other side of the stage, had four chairs aligned in a straight row facing center stage and a table with personal development magazines (from where I was sitting, I recognized the cover of an issue of Psychologies Magazine). Up until that last suspended moment of tenderness, gestures and physical contact other than medical had been incestuous (Antiochus (Xavier Boiffier), and his daughter, doubled by Catzéflis), brutal (when Camille Cayol as La Maquerelle (Bawd) was repeatedly physically abused by her husband, Le Maître (Pander), played by Christophe Grégoire, or in the various attempted rapes Marina had to go through), or at best awkward (when the newly revived Thaïsa learned she had lost her baby she spontaneously threw herself into the arms of a much embarrassed Cérimon/ Cécile Leterme, who was evidently at a loss how to react). Much in the way Pericles in Shakespeare's text fails to reward the fishermen as promised, Cheek by Jowl's Périclès did not offer a full final reconciliation, or even a full recovery, as Périclès was taken back to his hospital bed, thus leaving room for more waiting, and for extended hands to all involved in the story, and in history perhaps, from Périclès to today's survivors of the Mediterranean.
