  • Questionnaires exploring children's thinking about friendship relations, their perspective-taking competences, and their notions of popularity were presented to 48 children divided over four age groups (mean ages 5.9, 7.11, 10.3, and 12.2 years) and upper and lower sociometric status. The results suggest that concepts about processes leading to friendships form an integral part of concepts about friendships and that the latter are age-related. Perspective-taking skills were closely related to the conceptual development but not to measures of popularity. While age and gender differentially affected the relationship between the conceptual development and popularity, personality features and the need for social involvement were also found to play a role.
