Reports an error in "Effect of retention interval on showup and lineup performance" by Stacy A. Wetmore, Jeffrey S. Neuschatz, Scott D. Gronlund, Alex Wooten, Charles A. Goodsell and Curt A. Carlson ( Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition, 2015[Mar], Vol 4[1], 8-14). In the original article, there was an error in the ROC analysis of the fair and biased lineups. The fair lineup (pAUC = .08) and biased lineup (pAUC = .03) were significantly better than the showup (pAUC = .01), D = 5.71, p < .001 and D = 1.79, p < .05, respectively. In addition, there was a significant difference between the fair and biased lineups pAUC’s, D = 2.89, p = .003. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2015-05369-002). Showups—when a single suspect is presented to an eyewitness—are thought to be a more suggestive procedure than traditional lineups by the U.S. Supreme Court and social science researchers. The present experiment examined the impact of retention interval on showup identifications, because immediate showups might be no worse than, and perhaps even better than, a lineup conducted after a delay. Participants ( N = 1584) viewed a mock-crime video and then were presented with a showup or a simultaneous lineup, either immediately or a 48h delay. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses revealed that a showup never resulted in better identification accuracy than a lineup. We conclude with a discussion of whether showups should ever be used. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
